creating a Society for Microscopy. The special guest at this meeting was Professor José Carrascosa, the president of the European Microscopy Society. He presented the state-of-the-art for electron microscopy in Europe. He also stressed that that Polish microscopists, although of high reputation, have no representatives in European microscopy society. He drew attention to the advantages for all Polish microscopists of an official microscopy society of their own. After discussion, the members voted unanimously for a Polish Society for Microscopy to be set up and inaugurated a founding committee under the leadership of Professor Czyrska-Filemonowicz. The constitution and objectives of the new society were drawn up.

On the 11 January 2002, the first General Assembly of the Polish Society for Microscopy (PTMi) took place. The documents setting out the aims of the PTMi and the constitution were accepted by all members. Administrative bodies were also elected: an Executive Board, an Auditing Committee and a Court of Arbitration.

At present, the PTMi has composed of 106 members from 23 organizations in Poland, and in addition organizations in Austria, Germany and Switzerland. Under a membership agreement, every member of the PTMi is becomes automatically a member of the European Society of Microscopy.
